1959

  • Beginning of organization. Founder: Michael Kirby, Chairman of Ice Rink Section, Illinois Recreation Association National Recreation Congress. Arthur Goodfellow, speaker, Russell Perry, Secretary (also President Illinois Recreation Assoc.) Mr. Perry became the first Executive Director and continued in that position for 16 years. National Office in Fort Myers, FL

1960

  • First Annual Conference, Conrad Hilton, Chicago, IL
  • Bylaws adopted

1961

  • First Newsletter published (three pages)

1963

  • First ice skating trade show—20 exhibitors
  • Ice Skating Hall of Fame established. First award recipients
  • were Norval Baptie and Sonja Henie

1964

  • Alpha-Beta-Gamma Recreational Skater Program launched

1965

  • First Builders and Suppliers Directory issued

1966

  • Drill Teams first introduced in exhibition by Robert Unger, Huntsville, AL

1967

  • 8th Annual Conference held in North Hollywood, CA (first outside Chicago)

1968

  • ISIA accepted as an allied member of AAU

1969

  • First Membership Directory in booklet form
  • ISIA competitions started
  • Endorsement procedure established for competitions and shows

1970

  • Girl Scout Program developed

1971

  • Man and Woman of the Year awards established
  • Arthur Goodfellow donated antique skate displays to ISIA

1972

  • Arthur Goodfellow named first lifetime member of ISIA
  • Associate membership category established

1973

  • Joint Statement of Policy issued by ISIA and USFSA

1974

  • “216 Suggestions for Ice Rink Promotion” published

1975

  • Thomas E. Hall named Executive Director
  • National office moved to Wilmette, IL

1976

  • First issue of Recreational Ice Skating magazine published

1977

  • Individual membership (skater) category established
  • First computer installed for national test registration

1978

  • First Summit Conference—officers of ISIA, USFSA, and PSGA

1979

  • First female skater passed Freestyle 10—Laurie Chemsak, Berkeley, CA

1980

  • Thomas J. Sullivan Jr. named Executive Director

1981

  • First annual ISIA Recreational Team Championships of the U.S. held in San Diego, CA
  • First male skater passed Freestyle 10—Hank Green, Evanston, IL

1982

  • Retail Merchant membership category for pro shops and sporting goods stores established
  • Justine Townsend Smith named Executive Director
  • First ISIA International Recreational Skating Team appeared in Dubai, UAE

1983

  • Jon Robinson, Knoxville, TN, became first male to compete at Freestyle 10

1984

  • 25th Anniversary Conference, Dallas ISI

1985

  • First Figure 10 passed and competed by Sherry Dowlen, Denver
  • Lifetime Achievement Award established with Dorothy Hamill as first recipient
  • Panorama consumer show introduced at summer Championships

1986

  • First ISIA/AAU Winter Games held in Chicago, later renamed ISIA Winter Classic
  • First Train the Trainers seminar for instructors held in Chicago

1987

  • Red Wing Shoes made first donation to new ISIA Education Foundation in memory of Paul Riedell
  • First joint event implemented between ISIA, USFSA, PSGA— NutraSweet National Ice Skating Week
  • Instructors Section created

1988

  • First Management Seminars started in Chicago, Los Angeles, Newark, DE
  • October was NutraSweet National Ice Skating Month— Christopher Bowman and Dorothy Hamill spokespersons

1989

  • ISIA Education Foundation established as public charity 501(c)(3)
  • Evaline Card Smith skating collection donated to ISIA
  • First ISIA Judges Workshop held in Highland Park, IL
  • First regional competition event held in Los Angeles—ISIA West Coast Championships
  • ISIA Skate Asia, first international recreational competition in Hong Kong
  • First Couple 10 passed and competed: Jon Robinson & Lori Anderson

1990

  • First ISIA Education Foundation scholarships awarded (three) at $1,000 each

1991

  • Judges Workshops held across the country
  • First Management Certificate Program offered at conference
  • First Referee Training Workshop held at conference

1992

  • First Skating Director Certificate Program offered at conference
  • ISIA joined American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)
  • ISIA received Illinois Parks & Recreation Association (IRPA)
  • Community Service Award
  • First Dance 10 passed by Jessica Dolven, Ohio State University

1993

  • Judges Certification Program introduced at annual conference
  • Summer Championships renamed ISIA World Recreational Team Championships

1994

  • First annual ISIA Education Foundation Skating Spectacular fundraiser held during ISIA World Championships in Chicago

1995

  • The new name of Ice Skating Institute (ISI) announced at conference Management/Operations Seminars introduced in several ISI districts
  • First skating competition endorsed by ISI held in the Philippines

1996

  • Sarah Devereaux became the first skater to pass the ISI Freestyle 10 and Figure 10 tests in the same year

1997

  • First ISI Precision Classic held in Woodridge, IL
  • Peter Martell named Executive Director
  • ISI Web site established

1998

  • ISI World Headquarters moved to Dallas
  • New ISI logo introduced
  • Benton Wilcoxon Award for Excellence in Management established
  • Great Skate Award established

1999

  • First annual ISI Adult Championships held in Las Vegas
  • District Merit Award established

2000

  • Introduced new ISI Recreational Hockey membership
  • ISIAsia created to provide ISI programs and services throughout Asia

2001

  • Inaugural Ice Arena Institute of Management (iAIM) school
  • ISI National Merit Award established
  • Erika Amundsen Award created
  • Frank J. Zamboni Award established

2002

  • ISI International Merit Award established
  • Scott Hamilton named spokesperson for ISI Special Skater Program
  • Signed national partnership agreement with the Positive Coaching Alliance

2003

  • Completed installation of new membership database at ISI Headquarters
  • Launched new iAIM Online-Distance Learning Program
  • Added ISI Online, Updates and Forums as new forms of electronic communication

2004

  • Changed name of Associate membership to Professional membership
  • Added Affiliate class of membership
  • Signed affiliation agreement with IAAM
  • Revised ISI Hockey Badge testing program

2005

  • Introduced the weSKATE Kit
  • First annual Artistic Challenge competition held in Orlando, FL

2006

  • Launched weSKATE National Instructors Training program
  • Launched online Judges Certification Test
  • Introduced the Arthur Goodfellow Award
  • Launched weSKATE Club

2007

  • Introduced the Pioneer Award
  • Introduced Outstanding Participation Awards
  • Purchased ISI Headquarters building in Plano, TX

2008

  • Produced weSKATE Test Standards DVD
  • Purchased new association management software program
  • Changed to universal membership term for Individual and Professional members

  • Celebrated 50th Anniversary of ISI at annual Conference& Tradeshow and special 50th Anniversary Competition in Orlando, FL
  • Signed Joint Agreement with Professional Skaters Association (PSA) for Coaches Education, Training and Certification
  • Introduced new Open Freestyle tests and competition events
  • Published new ISI Handbook combining the previous Skaters and Coaches Handbook and Judges Manual
  • Instituted new Membership Rewards Program
  • Launched bi-monthly eNewsletter and ISI Facebook page

2010

  • Celebrated the 25th annual ISI Winter Classic competition in Anaheim, CA
  • Celebrated the 30th annual ISI World Team Championships in Marlborough, MA
  • First “Synchro Showcase” exhibition at Synchronized Championships event

2011

  • Introduced the Erika Amundsen ISI Adult Team Championship trophy
  • Introduced a new Collegiate division and champion trophy at the Adult Team Championships
  • Released weSKATE with ISILink software
  • Entered into an agreement with National Recreation and Park Association and National Training Center at Oglebay to host the iAIM School at Oglebay
  • Introduced interactive, digital versions of ISI EDGE and Recreational Ice Skating magazines

2012

  • First annual Holiday Challenge held in Danbury, CT
  • Upgrade membership software

  • iAIM Certification Skating Director course introduced at the ISI Conference
  • ISI Referee Certification Exam introduced online
